Rostrevor (4-7) v Newry Shamrocks (4-5)
Yet again this seeding group threw up another classic encounter that promotes all that is good about the game. This time it was Newry Shamrocks that nearly put the young reds to the sword in the final round of group games. Rostrevor required this win to ensure that they finished in the top 2 which will see them playing in the South Down division 1 league shortly.
With perfect conditions Shamrocks came flying out the gate catching the reds in their tracks. The greens rattled in 4 goals past a shell shocked Rostrevor team who had a total of 5 first team regulars missing. Things where not looking good but like all reds teams they battled back through a goal by Nathan Caulfield and points by Johnny Devlin and Caulfield again saw the reds trail the visitors by 4-3 to 1-3 at half time.
The management had to make changes at half time to try a pull this game out of the fire.
The start of the second half saw the fired up reds start to claw back into the Shamrocks lead. With the defence tightened up and the team starting to work as a unit again goals where pulled back by Philip South, Keelan Clerkin and Nathan Caulfield.
The reds took the lead in the heart stopping final 5 mins which they were not to lose. There were great performances in the second half by David Hegarty, Ben O’ Hanlon and Ryan Magee, Harry Cooper and Nathan Caulfield.
It takes 2 teams to make a great match and the Shamrocks display defies their league position. We wish them well for the rest of the season in their respective league.
Next up for the super reds is the start of our Division 1 league campaign v Ballyholland @ 11am on Sunday 5th May in Pettit Park.
Ballyholland had a good win over Rostrevor only over a week ago so I am sure the young reds will do their best to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.
