A strange start to the season in very quiet Pettit Park surroundings as our leagues commenced spectator free. Although a ‘bye’ week, both teams were fully engaged in battle from the off.
Conor Doyle opened the scoring for the campaign with a great turn and shot after being fed by Jordan Fegan. James Rice and Colm Murney added scores before Ardghal McMahon had the reds 4-2 up at the first half water break. Rostrevor went in to a 5 point lead by the 26th minute, the pick of the scores a lung busting run from Fegan who narrowly missed the top corner off the left foot. Rostrevor somewhat let Mayobridge back into the game before half time as the opposition rattled off 3 scores without reply before half time, leaving the score 8-6.
The second half looked to be a tale of goal opportunities, with Rostrevor missing two at one end, while Mayobridge planted 3 in the Red’s net during the 30 minutes. Indeed the goals had steered the Bridge into a 3-7 0-12 lead at one stage. Two sweetly struck 45s from Ardghal McMahon plus an outstanding score from distance from Caolan Mooney kept the reds in touch. 4 points down with 6 minutes remaining, the reds forced a strong finished. Shaun Parr coming to the fore in the closing stages with 3 points. A well contested game, and good preparation for the remainder of the campaign.
