Getting to know Shane Mulholland..

We took some time out to chat to our Senior football manager Shane Mulholland. Shane enjoyed a great playing career and is in the early years of a great managerial career.

1) Name?

Shane Mulholland

2) Club?

Ballyholland

3) Teams you played for in the past?

Ballyholland, Down, Ulster

4) Roll of honour as a player?

1 Minor A Championship, 3 IFC Championships, 1 McKenna Cup, 1 Railway Cup. Couple of nice personal awards – Colleges All Star 94, South Down POY, Irish News Ulster All Star and GAA All Star Nominee in 99. Unfortunately generally more heartache than success which I regret!

5) Teams you’ve managed in the past?

Ballyholland, QUB Sigerson, Down Minors

6) Roll of Honour as a manager?

No titles as yet! Promotion from div2 and staying in Div1 for 3 seasons getting to 5th with Ballyholland has been the significant achievement so far.

7) What attracted you to the Rostrevor job?

I knew the quality of players at the club from afar, and in recent years, my involvement with County Minors meant I was aware of the calibre of Conall, Nicky, James D, James R, Piaras etc etc I was also aware of Caolan, Jonny and Conor’s involvement with u21 and Senior County teams. That’s a fantastic base to work with.

The long and recent history of Minor Championship success in the club suggests a thriving Under Age programme, and I wanted the challenge of trying to transfer that to the Senior end. Promotion is the goal and then progress to top 3 in Down has to be the target.

8) What did you least like when playing against Rostrevor?

The old changing rooms weren’t great! But actually Rostrevor was one of the grounds I enjoyed playing at. The style of football meant Rostrevor also allowed you to play – something I am going to try and change with the current crop!! A few barbs thrown back and forward with Budgie over the years (and Jake Rooney if we go way back!) but I have largely good relationships with many of the Rostrevor oul hands to be honest.

9) Favorite GAA memory?

Down All Ireland wins in 91/94.
Meeting my da on the field in Casement after the 99 Ulster Semi Final win will always be special for me.
Sharing a changing room with some of the greats during the Railway Cup win in 2000.

But Club success with Ballyholland will always remain most dear. This is something I would love Rostrevor to experience in the next 3 years because nothing beats the feeling of camaraderie winning with lads you grew up with and socialise with. The bond is never stronger!

10) Favorite GAA Player?

Maurice Fitzgerald! Pure class.

Thanks Shane for taking the time. Best of luck to yourself, the back room team & the panel for tomorrow night’s game and the season ahead!
